WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PHOTOS IN BOISE

[CHECK OUT THE FAQ TO GET STARTED]

  1. For Fall Photos (September-mid October) Monday-Thursday Will Tend To Work Best

When the leaves start changing in Boise, you can practically hear the camera shutters starting to click. This tends to be PEAK photo season around here. Plan ahead sure to book your spot earlier than you think you need to and try to make a weekday work if you can so the location will be less crowded.

2. An Hour Or So Before Sunset Is Best For Lighting for Photos Year Round

I usually recommend the hour before sunset as my ideal time to take any kind of photos. The light is soft and glowy and during summer this helps that the evening is cooler. The only exception is if there are tall buildings or trees around your location, or if you pick a popular destination that will have lots of other people around at that time. If you want your photos in mid-November- this may mean the ideal time will be around 4:30pm!

3. Wear What You're Comfortable In

With few exceptions, if you feel good about what you're wearing it will come across as looking good in the photos. Coordinating colors, cute shoes, and fun accessories are all fantastic- but the main thing is that the outfit looks like YOU and YOU love it! Generally for women I would say a garment that has some movement like a flowy dress photographs beautifully, but I really encourage everyone to show up in what they fell comfortable in.

4. Pick a Date Between Spring and Early Fall for Best Weather

Weather in Boise can be unpredictable during spring and fall. If you're looking for clear skies and no freezing temps, the end of May to mid-October has fairly reliable sunny skies. March and April can get rain, but more often the temperature tends to be chilly and windy. From late October to November, it tends to rain and cool off quickly in the evenings.

Where to have photos taken in Boise

[here is our location winner list]

Boise Foothills

Bordering the North side of Boise, extending West from Bogus Basin to North of Garden City and Eagle. There are dozens of trails, roads, and biking paths that zig zag between the rolling hills, up mountains, and through creeks.

Military Reserve trail and Hull's Gulch are perfect spots nearly year round (watch out for mud in the winter and spring). Wildflowers grow in the spring, and golden grasses and green trees in the summer make it a gorgeous spot for photos.

Bogus Basin

About a half hour drive from downtown Boise. Full of forested mountain trails, these trails are typically snowy from October- April. There are trails that open during the summer, but if you're looking for snow photos, you can easily stop on the drive up and scope a scenic spot. A short hop off the road up there can be all you need for amazing snow photos. Beautiful views of Boise and the valley below and filled with tall pines and rocky views, this makes for very scenic photos year round. Be sure to check the road conditions and trail conditions before you head up there. Most of the trails don't open until the snow is melted and the mud is dried.

Boise Greenbelt

A 25 mile long tree-lined path that extends along the side of the Boise River. A series of nature habitats, parks, and scenic views are connected by the Greenbelt. Reid Merrill Park in Eagle is a favorite, and one of my favorite spots along the river is a short ten minute walk from the parking lot. Bridges, sandy banks and river rocks plus tall trees make for beautiful background at any season.

Downtown Boise

From freak alley to the top of a parking garage high-rise (I really like the parking garage here), there are so many options around the heart of the city. Mural walls and photogenic coffee shops dot the city streets. Art sculptures on sidewalks, modern and classic buildings, make this a great spot if you're looking for an urban vibe. Very walkable, and easy to get to.

Kathryn Alberston Park

A hidden gem of a nature preserve just a few minutes from downtown Boise is a fan favorite. With very minimal upkeep from the city (in a good way) this park seems like a world away from the busy streets. Ponds and meandering paved paths snake through 50 foot tall trees and what seems like forrest canopies. This park's foliage changes dramatically with the seasons- wildflowers in the summer and stunning orange leaves in the fall.
